Volunteers augment the Museum staff in a variety of different positions. They perform many important tasks and responsibilities essential to the operation of the Museum. They enhance the Museum’s ability to perform its mission and better serve the public.
We are currently seeking volunteers for the following positions:
Lead tours for individuals and groups. This position requires a high degree of scheduling flexibility. It involves meeting and greeting individuals or groups arriving for scheduled tours; collecting and processing admission fees; and, conducting the tours. Conducting tours requires familiarity with current guest exhibits, as well as semi-permanent exhibits and being able to answer questions concerning all exhibits. It also requires the knowledge and ability to discuss the history and mission of the museum.
Help with behind-the-scenes event setup and hosting. This position requires a high degree of scheduling flexibility. It involves assisting with the setup of various museum events and activities. It requires the ability to lift, carry and arrange tables and chairs of varying sizes and weights, for events. It also requires availability to assist with hosting events. These can be daytime or evening events.
Assist with the creation of marketing materials – This position requires familiarity with the Canva graphic design or similar tool for creating various announcements, posters, flyers, newsletters and other notices for online, email or direct mailing campaigns. The position requires working closely with the Executive Director and staff to create and coordinate graphic designs intended to promote the museum and museum events, etc.
Help at the reception desk – This position requires availability to work a four-hour shift, during public hours, on either Friday or Saturday. It involves greeting visitors; welcoming them to the museum; collecting admission fees; and, giving a short explanation of our current exhibits, as well as answering questions about the museum and exhibits. It also involves some light housekeeping and tidying up the museum space.
Help with social media and marketing – This position requires familiarity with the use of Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter posts to advertise and promote museum exhibits, activities and events. It requires the time and ability to post photos and information relating to current and upcoming exhibits, activities and events. It also involves tracking both favorable and unfavorable comments and providing feedback on these comments to the Executive Director and staff.
Assisting with School Group tours in events – This position requires a high degree of scheduling flexibility. It involves assisting the Director of Education with school age groups tours and activities. Ages range from approximately 6 years old to college students. These activities generally involve conducting a tour; leading age-appropriate discussions; and, facilitating various art projects and exercises. Previous experience working with children and teens is preferred. A background check must be completed before working with school group tours and events.
Volunteer Application
Upon receipt of your application, a member of the museum staff will contact you to acknowledge receipt of your application. If we have a position that matches your previous work life/volunteer experience, we will contact you to schedule an initial interview. The purpose of the interview is to review your application and discuss ways in which you can be involved in the museum.
As part of the interview, the staff member will ask if you (1) have ever been charged, indicted, or convicted of a violent or aggravated crime; (2) have ever been charged or convicted of a crime involving a minor; and (3) if you will consent to the museum conducting a background check.
Following the interview, the staff member will provide an orientation tour of the museum facilities.
If we do not have a current position that matches your previous work life/volunteer experience, we will maintain your application for one year. If a position that matches your experience opens, you will be contacted to determine your interest at that time.
